Chengdu Du Fu Thatched Cottage was the former residence of Du Fu, the Sage of Poetry, during his exile in Chengdu. In the winter of 759 AD, fleeing the Anshi Rebellion, Du Fu traveled to Chengdu with his family. The following spring, he built a "thatched cottage" by the Huanhua Stream to settle down. Du Fu lived here for three years and nine months, composing more than 240 poems that have been passed down to this day. The site is hailed as "a sacred place in the history of Chinese literature".
At the end of the Tang Dynasty, the poet Wei Zhuang discovered the ruins of the cottage and rebuilt a thatched hut on the site. Since then, Du Fu Thatched Cottage has undergone fourteen large-scale renovations and expansions spanning the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties up to the present. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was fully renovated and officially opened to the public in 1952. The Du Fu Memorial Hall was established in 1955, and renamed Chengdu Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum in 1985. It is now among the first batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level, a First-Class National Museum, a National Key Protection Unit for Ancient Books, and a National 4A-level Tourist Attraction. Its land area has expanded from merely one mu when Du Fu first built the cottage to nearly 800 mu today, including a 300-mu cultural relic zone and a 500-mu Huanhua Garden scenic zone.
Chengdu Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum is a Category II public welfare institution, and also operates under two additional nameplates: the Art Museum of Du Fu Thatched Cottage Academy of Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting, and Chengdu Chinese Calligraphy Museum. It has an authorized staffing quota of 123 employees and 16 internal functional departments, with ticket revenue serving as its primary source of funding.
As a museum featuring ancient architecture, it houses the country’s largest collection and exhibition center for Du Fu research materials as well as paintings and calligraphic works themed on Du Fu’s poems. It serves as a vital platform for inheriting and promoting China’s fine poetic culture, a representative base of classical gardens in Western Sichuan, and a conservation and exhibition center for ancient buildings of Western Sichuan. Its ancient buildings are characterized by wooden column-and-tie construction, with landmark structures including the Grand Hall, Hall of Poetic History, Ministry of Works Shrine, Thatched Hut, and Scripture Repository. Its distinctive poetic garden landscapes cover the Bonsai Garden, Orchid Garden, Plum Garden and more.
